Decadent, Easy Philly Cheesesteak Egg Rolls [Recipe]

Mmmmm, a positively indulgent dinner! Don’t you think you’ve earned it, though? Besides, portion control with these rolls is super easy. You can also add in more vegetables if you’d like! You will need to set aside a little extra time for this recipe due to the two-step preparation for the meat/filling and the filling/frying of the egg rolls. It’s still not overly time-consuming, and it’s sure to please EVERYONE at the dinner table. It looks complicated but I promise it’s not. If you’re feeling brave have the kids help fill and fold the egg rolls. It’s fun yet almost impossible to mess up!

Philly Cheesesteak Egg Rolls

Prep Time: 30 min.
Cook Time: 20 min.
Serves: 6 (24 rolls)


1 lb Western Grassfed Beef (you can use ground beef, or 
you can use steak meat. If you use ground beef, keep the pieces large when you brown it. If you use steak, try searing it first, or even grilling it to give the meat nice smoky flavor.)
1 tsp   Salt
1 tsp Pepper
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
2 tbsp Butter
1 Onion, finely chopped
2 Garlic cloves, finely chopped or minced
1/2 Green bell pepper, finely chopped
1/2 cup Mushrooms, chopped
12 Slices of cheese to be broken in half 
(Provolone, American, or Velveeta are my favorite)
1 tsp Paprika
1 tsp Chili powder
1 tsp  Thyme
24 Egg roll wrappers
  Small bowl of water
  Oil for frying


Meat Preparation:

  1. If you are using ground beef, start by browning the beef in the skillet. Be careful not to break up the meat too much, you want pieces the size of a pecan, or bigger. If you are using steak meat, chop it up into walnut or pecan sized pieces. I recommend the steak meat already be seared prior to chopping.

  2. Add paprika, chili powder, thyme, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce to beef. Gently stir and remove from pan.

  3. Add butter to the pan, gently melt.

  4. Add the chopped onions, green bell pepper and mushrooms to buttered pan, cooking until caramelized.

  5. Return beef to the pan of caramelized vegetables, gently stir. Let the mixture cool while you prepare your egg roll wrappers and cheese.

Egg Roll Preparation: 

  1. Lay egg roll wrappers on a flat surface, placing half a slice of cheese on each wrapper.

  2. Add three tablespoons of the meat mixture on top of the cheese.

  3. Fold wrapper over the meat mixture, using small amounts of water to seal the roll. For step by step instructions, please click here.

    (If you don’t plan on cooking all the cheesesteak egg rolls you’ve made, you should freeze them after this process. Once you are ready to cook the rest you can pull them out of the freezer, thaw, and proceed to the cooking instructions.)

  4. Pour enough fry oil into a pan to cover one or more inches. Heat oil.  It should be hot enough for the oil to form little bubbles once the egg roll is placed in the pan. If it is bubbling TOO rapidly, the oil is too hot.

  5. Drop enough egg rolls into the pan so they aren’t crowded, but you also aren’t only cooking one or two at a time. If you crowd, they can stick together or drop the temperature of the oil. A rule of thumb is 3 to 4 depending on your pan size.

  6. The egg wrappers are done cooking once they are browned. Remove them from the oil and place on a cooling rack.

    (Do not place them on paper towels, paper plates, or regular plates. The goal is to avoid trapping steam, which will make them soggy. A cooling rack allows for heat to release while still keeping the cheesesteak rolls dry.)

  7. Once rolls have cooled a bit, slice them in half in a diagonal direction. They should resemble 3D triangles.

Serve egg rolls immediately with your choice of dipping sauce.
